Movie Recommendations

Post by Dumspiro »

This thread is for films that cover the PTO, there are so few
First some Japanese made with English subtitles.

Eternal Zero - simply awesome
a bunch of netflix like places have it with English subtitles the link is one I watched and captured with browser d/ler

Fires on the Plain
1959 black and white about Japanese soldiers trying to escape Leyte Island before being killed or dying of starvation. Very bleak, reminiscent of Hell is for Heroes, and deals with the issues of abandoning soldiers, starvation and cannibalism. I've always thought there could be some good movies about this subject along with soldiers holding out for years after the end.

Battle in the Pacific
2011, about IJ soldiers during and after battle on Saipan. Almost as good as Letters from Iwo Jima. American parts being absolutely crap. Still good perspective on Japanese fighting in the islands.

Zero Fighter
1976 Ozora no samurai
could be interesting but can only find Russian dubbed and subtitled on net.
1984 Zerosen moyu
can't find yet

A remake of Fires on the Plain was made last year and has been released to those netflix type sites. I haven't found a way to watch without annoying registration and the like, but if your get the chance check it out. There should be English subtitles.

Here's a Wiki list

Some interesting stuff there. Many about the Philippines and Burma, many with darker themes than the old patriotic films.
